Jack McDavid and Down Home BBQ Take ILBBQF Title

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- Jack McDavid and his Down Home Barbeque team came to Lake Placid, N.Y. this July 4th weekend to do one thing… win the third annual Lake Placid, NY—I Love Barbeque Festival (ILBBQF) grand championship crown.  McDavid, who starred in the TV Food Network’s “Grillin’ and Chillin’” with Bobby Flay, had come to Lake Placid with high expectations each of the first two years, but came away each time out of the top-five in the final overall standings.

“Each year I thought I turned in pretty good food to the judges, but they didn’t seem to think so, and last year I left here completely disappointed with my results,” remarked McDavid.  “I tried to make sure that what happened last year would not happen again this year.”

McDavid and his trademark duds, denim bib overalls, were all business Sunday.  The Food & Wine Magazine’s “Best Chefs in America” Award winner won the beef brisket category and finished in the top-10 in chicken, ribs and pulled pork en route to the overall festival title.  As the ILBBQF festival champion, McDavid and his crew also earned the title of New York State champion and is also eligible to compete in the American Royal and Kansas City Barbeque national championship, Oct. 2-5, in Kansas City, Mo.

Last year’s defending ILBBQF grand championships, the Purple Turtle Catering Company, cooked their way to a 12th-place overall finish, while I Smell Smoke, the 2006 festival champions, were eighth overall.

The near perfect July 4th weekend weather drew an estimated 8,000 people to Lake Placid’s Olympic oval, where they enjoyed food demonstrations, rides, music and plenty of barbeque.  The proceeds raised during the three-day festival benefited the Thomas Shipman Youth Center, which provides a supervised safe and exciting environment and programs where local children can grow and develop as individuals.

Thomas Shipman, a Lake Placid police officer whose life was cut short in 1999, inspired the center, which the festival will benefit. For the past seven years, the Shipman Youth Center has provided a supervised safe and exciting environment and programs where local children can grow and develop as individuals.
